I question whether history teachers (myself included) do enough to provide students with relevant skills, easily and obviously transferable to the real world.
One has to be empathetic to everybody. This doesn’t mean one has to excuse or explain everything. You have to explain, but you don’t have to excuse.
As a high school junior, like any well-intentioned mother, mine enrolled me in a Kaplan SAT preparation course. To this day, I can think of no greater scam or bigger waste of money.
I want teachers to push the envelope, so to speak, and to engage students in worthwhile discussion. But at the same time, academic freedom is not a free ticket for race baiting.
